Tigerfishing in Africa
By Roger Kingston
Tigers in Africa - Fishing The Zambezi Tigerfish is an awesome predator and fantastic sporting fish for the angler. They are found in many African river systems including the Nile and Congo but in the Zambezi they are simply superb. A further species is the Goliath Tiger and lives in the Congo River and is simply enormous and more reminiscent of a shark. I have fished the Upper Zambezi at Impalilla Island in Namibia out of Ichingo Lodge, the premier fly fishing lodge on the system. The island is separated from the Caprivi Strip by the Kasai Channel and on one side is the Zambezi and the other is the Chobe River. The 2 rivers join a mile south of the Mombova Rapids and the pool just below the rapids is Tiger Heaven. I fished there in June as the flood waters were receding with the “bulldog run” on. The bulldog being a bait fish of about 3 inches or more long. An artificial fly fished deep and fast will be hit with ferocity and the subsequent run of the tiger is one of power and resilience. Live or dead baiting on a drifted or static line will also produce results. Spinning or lure fishing will also produce results with these fish. The best way of finding the big Tigers is to look for Hippos and to anchor upstream of them and slowly drift a bait down to just behind or to the side of the Hippo pod. As the hippos relieve themselves, the bait fish gorge on their muck, this brings the big tigers into he vicinity. You then have a captive audience and all hell breaks loose as a Tigerfish is hooked and the hippos get spooked! The extreme beauty of the game parks which surround the Zambezi and the animals and birdlife make this a wonderful place to be to relax and thank goodness mobile phones don not work here! To me its a special place and I long to return.

Wow, that thing really does look like a tiger, doesn't it? Thanks for sharing your experience.
Are ya sure that's a REAL fish you're holdin' there???
What an incredible fishing trip you've described here. I for one would sure like to have seen the hook-up. I'm wondering if they're good eating... Great photo, nice size fish!
Great article Roger. I'd never heard of a tiger fish until I read your intel. Sounds like it would be quite a battle to land one. Keep up the good work. gilbertg
