Sunshine Coast

By Roger Kingston of Buderim Osteopath

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast in South East Queensland is probably Australia’s most desirable place to live and raise a family. Its about an hours’ drive north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway and begins at Caloundra and stretches north all the way to Noosa. To the west is the Hinterland and the Glass House Mountains with the picturesque villages of Maleny, Montville and Mapleton. To the east is the ocean and the USA!

Driving north from Caloundra along the Nicklin Way you pass through Moffat Beach, Dicky Beach, Currimudi, Buddina, Warana, Wurtulla, Minyama entering Mooloolaba and taking the coast road through Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore, Mudjimba, Marcoola, Coolum Beach, Peregian Beach, Marcus Beach, Sunshine Beach and eventually reaching the stunning town of Noosa.

The area’s primary focus is tourism and retirement though the numerous small businesses provide limited employment. With the current global financial crisis having its effects much of the male work force has left for the mines seeking employment. Though with the expansion of services out of the Sunshine Coast airport its predicted that the area will become a residential hub for the mining community and their families.

The University of the Sunshine Coast in the Buderim area is undergoing expansion and currently focuses on health environmental and eduction studies. With the future Sunshine Coast Hospital in Kawana being opened in 2014 it is hoped that a medical school will open in conjunction with the university. The new hospital is long overdue and currently its role is taken by the hospital in Nambour. There is a vibrant alternative scene on the Coast with osteopaths and acupuncturists amongst the mix of practitioners.

Sport and the water forms a major part of life here, especially with the Surf Clubs and their Nipper programs. Mooloolaba is just one of many clubs with a patrolled beach keep the swimmers and their families safe between the red and yellow flage.

Food of all types, from the humble Aussie pie to 5 star dining is never far away, and variety is never an issue. King Ludwigs is a wonderful Bavarian restaurant in Maleny with spectacular views over the mountain range; its beer is pretty good too!

With low crime, good schools, great climate, extensive sporting and cultural facilities the Sunshine Coast is indeed a fantastic place to live. Buderim is thought of as “the” place to live as it is ideally situated for access to the beaches, motorway and hinterland. If you want to live the good life and want your children to live in a safe and progressive environment then do not look any further than the Sunshine Coast.
