Osteopaths Training in Australia
By Roger Kingston
Training to be an Osteopath The training of an Osteopath varies depending on where in the world you are although the standards and syllabus are becoming ever more indistinguishable. In the USA, an Osteopath has the same training as a Medical Dr with an undergraduate module in Osteopathic Technique. Once the DO has graduated he may choose to do a residency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine though many American osteopathic Drs. never actually take an osteopathic manipulative approach to their practice. In Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe the standard is becoming closer with all schools offering a BSC or MSc degree after 4 - 5 years of training. Australia has the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Victoria University and Southern Cross University which all offer a 5 year MSC degree. I trained at the European School of Osteopathy in the UK, graduating in 1993 with a DO in Osteopathy. The undergraduate training covers a very similar format to that a “conventional” medical student would take, except that there is less emphasis on biochemistry, pharmacology and surgery. The osteopathic student would take the basic sciences, pathology, differential diagnosis, radiology etc., but the biggest difference is in the practical “hands on” application of osteopathic diagnosis and technique. The undergraduate training is primarily “to train the hands”! Whilst the standard of undergraduate training in New Zealand, Australia and the UK is identical but with the exception of the USA there are variable standards across the rest of the world. There are attempts to standardise the training and to reach agreement on the standard but as of yet its not an international agreement. In Australia, New Zealand trained Osteopaths may register in Australia under the Trans Tasman Agreement. Though moves are underway to offer mutual recognition of UK and USA trained osteopaths it hasn’t happened yet (mid 2010). So osteopaths trained overseas must undergo examination in Australia and this will continue when the profession comes under the national umbrella in late 2010 with the Australian Osteopathy Board. An Osteopath in Australia is trained to a high standard, is safe and bound by a strict ethical code.

The the numbers of osteopaths increasing in Australia? I would hope to see more people turning to osteopathy for health solutions.
I see an osteopath who is also a chiropractor and he is WONDERFUL. he has told me that very few people are actually trained in hands on manipulation of bones and tissues here in the US and that true osteopathy is hardly ever done any more. Every time I see him for whatever is wrong he somehow, its like magic really, just places his hands on me and healing takes place. its very subtle but it works.
Thanks for helping me understand the distinction between a traditional MD and an Osteopath. I'd be curious to know in a future Intel why you chose the Osteopath route.
