Nippers

By Roger Kingston

Nippers

Every Sunday morning all over coastal Australia children from age 7 can take part in Nippers, the junior section of their local Surf Life Saving Club. As the ocean forms a major part of Australian culture the dangers it also poses can not be underestimated. Hence it is vital that children learn how to read a beach, be safe in the water, have fun and also to be able to help their fellow swimmer who encounters difficulties.

Kids, dressed in their club colours gather on the beach with swimmers, rash shirts and swimming caps. They are organised into their age group and have a team manager and coach. They progress from the under 8’s to under 14s and after that they can train to become fully fledged surf life savers and do patrols under supervision on their beach.

For the under 8s the morning usually consists of a warm up followed by beach races, wave and water skills, followed by boards. The parents are encouraged to help as spotters in the water and to help around the club in some capacity.

In the 5 months I have been involved with Nippers I have seen children who were terrified of the ocean develop, loose their fear and become competitive. Its all about fun with a serious message of personal safety in the water.

The kids learn to dive under breaking waves, to swim courses, to paddle boards and ride the waves in. As they get older the water skills and surf life saving skills become more intensive. They will learn CPR, first aid, surf rescue techniques and they will compete against each other. Then there are carnivals where they can compete against over clubs.

The children love this and so do the adults. Its a major part of Australian beach life and one any new comer should immerse themselves in as soon as possible.
