Legal status of the Osteopathic Profession in UK
By Roger Kingston of Roger Kingston - Osteopath
As a practicing Osteopath I get called a "quack" from time to time and this is incredibly frustrating as well as insulting. It also reflects a degree of ignorance from sections of the public! Before 1993 in the UK anyone could call themselves an osteopath and practice without breaking any laws. It Britain we operate under a system called "Common Law" which means you can do whatever you like providing there isn't a law saying you can not. This is in contrast to the French "Napoleonic Law" meaning its illegal unless there is a law saying its ok! So pre 1993 there were numerous colleges and organisations representing the osteopathic profession in the UK and their standards varied to a degree. However Simon Fielding, an osteopath, was able to unite the factions into a single group who then lobbied government with the Osteopaths Act of 1993 following. This unified the profession under one umbrella, the General Osteopathic Council, which regulates the standard of training both at undergraduate and post graduate CPD, and more importantly maintains standards of professional behaviour. So now a modern osteopath will have undertaken at least 4 years of a degree standard training, some graduate now with an MSc, and are registered with the one State recognised registration board. So how exactly can I be a "quack" when the State recognises my training and registration. I am here to help you and there is nothing bogus about what my fellow osteopaths do. We are here to help you and be your friend in need.
Dr Roger Kingston is an osteopath, cranial osteopath and paediatric trained osteopath with a practice Buderim - Queensland, Australia and simply known as the Buderim Osteopath.

Thank you for sharing the regulating and training of osteopaths in the UK, Roger. I'm a believer that all professionals need specific traing and monitoring. Best wishes. Frederick
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I couldn't agree more Frederick. The UK public is very safe with "us" osteopaths and I hope as a profession we can use this to be able to do more to help others.
