Guardian Angels York
By Roger Kingston
Guardian Angels in York Guardian Angels York, is a charity that was set up to raise funds to equip and run 2 beds in a paediatric intensive care unit at York District Hospital. Why the Government finds the concept of funding illegal wars more important than providing for critically ill children with the services they need baffles me. A campaign of fund raising was set up by some of the hospital staff under the auspices of Peter Bebb, Maureen Aughey and Dr Robin Ball and was supported by the York Evening Press Newspaper with the aims of raising £500,000 and then further money year. So how did I come to be involved? 2.5 years ago my son was born and came home and 48 hours later he fell unconscious at home and was taken under blue light to hospital. I watched while he was resuscitated, it was like something out of ER and I even thought George Cluney made an appearance at some stage! I recall being fixed on the electronic monitors praying that his O2 sats and blood pressure would improve. The amount of pipes, tubes coming out of a newborn baby was incredible. Eventually he was stabilized and transferred to a standard paediatric ward which was not equipped in terms of resources or expertise to care from him. The decision to transfer him to Leeds to a specialist neonatal intensive care unit was taken and he then spent a further 10 days there before being allowed home. He has since made a full recovery and is now a very happy and healthy child. His collapse was due to an infection that had overwhelmed him leaving him septic. The whole incident was terrifying but perhaps what affected me the most was the fact that one f the paediatricians in Leeds told me that we were lucky they had a bed for him! At certain times of the year they are full and can not take even serious cases. Had this happened my son would have died. I hearing this and simultaneously hearing about the Guardian Angels Appeal I wanted to see if I could contribute. With the kindness of a wonderful man, Mr Saleem Acktar of the Jinnah Restaurant chain, a curry night was organised at the Flaxton Jinnah Restaurant with a black tie function. A fantastic night was held and £4,300 was raised and a cheque presented to the unit. Just remember, I thought I would never have needed an intensive care unit for myself or my children. It nearly wasn’t there, but I will do what I can to raise awareness and raise funds to make sure its there for the next child who needs it. |

Glad things turned out alright. From 1964 to 1969 while on Saskatoon Highway Patrol, I had numerous high speed trips between University Hospital in the city and rural hospitals carrying blood for emergency operations. Many of these trips were done at speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour with all emergency equipment in full operation. I remember a trip one night where I met another police car about 60 miles out of Saskatoon. I checked my watch as I started for the hospital. I put the gas pedal to the floor and only slowed slightly as I got into the city. I pulled to a stop in the emergency department ambulance bay, grabbed the cooler with the bag(s) of blood and rushed into the desk. After handing the cooler to the nurse I checked my watch. The trip had taken 15 minutes. When I went out to the police car I could smell burning rubber. When I touched one of the tires I burned my hand. I checked with the emergency department later that night and was told that my quick trip had saved a lady's life. It was a great feeling. gilbertg
Wow, what an experience, especially for your loved one. I'm so glad to hear of your child's recovery. The "Curry Night" fundraiser sounds delightful, congrats. Wishing you much continued success in raising funds for more needed facilities.
