Dr Still - American Healer
By Roger Kingston of Roger Kingston - Osteopath
Dr Andrew Still - American Healer Many amazing discoveries and inventions have come out of the United States but for me the genius of Dr Still is possibly the greatest gift bestowed on the world. Dr Still was a local Dr in Kirksville and fought in the Civil War before starting a family. A terrible strain of meningitis killed all his children despite his best efforts to save them with the medicine he knew at the time. This was the era of leeches, mercury pills, purging and blood letting and Still realised that there had to be a better way. He surmised that God would not have put us on this earth without all the medicines and the innate ability for our own body’s to heal themselves. He then set about finding out why some recovered and others didn’t, this was the dilemma to solve. He became an expert anatomist through study in the native American burial grounds, risking his life in the process, and as a keen mechanic he was able to apply engineering principles to anatomy and find a way to affect the human physiology and thus combat illness and suffering. Over 30 years he developed his technique and by hand alone his results were so outstanding no other Dr could compete with him so they begged him to open a school and teach them. The first American School of Osteopathy was subsequently opened in Kirksville and the railway was diverted to bring the huge numbers of patients to the new hospital. Dr Still was inspirational to his students, if not chaotic in his teaching, but he left a legacy of the 2nd largest system of medicine in the USA with an emphasis on family practice. A museum stands today in Kirksville in his name. A great man and a great Dr. |

Leeches and blood-letting... It had been around a long time. Hard to image it... Regards, Jim
Does Osteopathy help treat or prevent Meningitis?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
No, you would need intrathecal antibiotics and quickly. In Still's day he treated them, some survived most died. But we would treat the affects of the meningitis on the body once the infection had been killed. We work with our brother Drs (MDs) where we can.
Thank you for sharing this interesting story, Roger. With all of the specialists today, finding a family physician is getting more difficult. Best wishes. Frederick
