Dr Lawrence Jones - Osteopath
By Roger Kingston of Buderim Osteopath
Dr Lawrence Jones DO The first in a series of the great osteopaths that have inspired me and whose teachings have inspired me shaping my development s an osteopath. Dr Jones practiced as an osteopathic Dr before WW2 and as the osteopathic Drs were deemed unworthy to serve as Drs in the US army they stayed at home and tok over the role of family Dr. They were massively overworked and Dr Jones tells a story of a young man coming into his waiting room in acute pain and bent double with back pain; Jones was running an hour behind and his reception full and standing room only. He found a place for the young man to wait literally bent over and propped up with cushions on the floor and he waited his turn. Eventually Dr Jones called him and the man got up off the floor pain free and stood straight. Jones was amazed and wanted to know why such a miracle had happened when all he had done was to rest his patient for an hour in a very bizarre position. Many months later after experimenting with simply positioning his patients in exaggerated positions of ease he discovered a correlation with consistent anatomical locations which he termed Jones Points. The process was simple the point correlated with specific muscle groups or joints and if the joint was tender the tenderness could be switched off when the patient was placed in a very specific release position. The pain and muscle spasm would release very quickly. He named his approach - Strain Counter Strain or since renamed Positional Release Technique. Over many years in practice Dr Jones presented his work to the profession and its unique use seemed to be in treating the acutely ill patient. If an area of dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system was having a profound effect on the physiology of the patient, for example a rigid rib cage in a person with a consuming chest infection, this approach could be used with minimal irritation to the patient but with huge physiological improvements. I was introduced to Dr Jones’s work as an undergraduate by Gez Lamb, my mentor at the European School of Osteopathy, and was fascinated it sounded incredibly complicated but in practice was incredibly simple and it took many years to realise that when someone is sick or in pain that the simple things are often the most important aspects in healing. Over 18 years I have developed Dr Jones’s work so that it works in my hands and it is an approach I am so glad to have mastered. I regret never having studied with him as he was unique and the profession owes him a great vote of thanks for this blessing he gave us. He was in essence an osteopath and a healer - we may not see his kind again.
